Friday August 20th The Minor went up to Chester today to be medically examined: I had intended to fish the river today but the weather was so bright I gave up the idea, and after the Coach had started to Coedmaeswglog, and met John Davies with Don there [sic]. Charlie Owen, whom I met at Bont Rhidyr [Rhaeadr] gave me leave to go over Gethli [sic Gelli] Farm, and here i found most of the birds I saw, but they were very wild and did not shoot up to form. We came across a covey of at least 12 birds after lunch on Gethli, but I could only get a long shot at them, and we never found them again. I gave up shooting soon after 2 o`clock, walked home, and paid at the Big Pool on my way. I went out to try for a Sewin when the sun went down; I rose two in the Ford Pool, and two in the Pool in the hollow, one of which i killed. The Minor returned from Chester at 10 o`clock. Tuesday August 24th It looked very like a wet day this morning, and I started out to fish the Wnion, but the rain cleared off considerably by 12 o`clock, and it turned out a fine day. However the river rose a foot or two, and there was a chance of getting hold of a Sewin. I also hooked a Sewin with fly just below Bontnewydd. The Minor left me to fish Llyn Goch [sic] and the Dolserau Pools and killed one small sewin. Trout [Wnion] 51 Sea trout 1

Thursday August 26 A very windy day. The Minor and I went down to the oats at Dolgun in quest of rabbits: but they were not out, afterwards I fished the river below Dolgun and only rose fishedone Sewin, catching a few small trout. The Minor came in to lunch with some nice trout which he had caught in the Clwyedoc [sic]: and he fished up to Caerynwch during the afternoon,. I started up Llyn Cynwych [sic], but found the breeze too strong, and soon came down again: and read. Trout LE (Clwyedoc) 64 ME (Wnion) 21.

Courtney , Wynne and I went over to Tyn-y-Groes in a car. Found the river in grand order, consequently we went to the upper water to fish with fly. I began at the Eden Bridge Pool, and we fished right up to the Falls, but hardly moved a fish, but at the Rock Pool on our way down I hooked a good fish, and Wynne lost another. It was a poor day considering the state of the water but the fish took very shlyly [shyly].We were home in good time for dinner. Sea trout (Mawddach) 1.

We woke up early this morning to find the Wnion in one of the highest floods known for years. The river was over the bridge, and through the plantation. Wynne and I went before breakfast and tried with worm, but really there was no place to fish, and Wynne alone caught a small sewin. After breakfast at 8.30 we started over to the Mawddach ... and went up to Gethigemlyn , and worm fished. I caught three good fish in this pool, and one other with worm; and in the afternoon we went off to the Eden, and found it just in order for fly The sewin, however, rose very badly, and Wynne caught a small one. The latter left me at the junction and I crossed at the wooden bridge, and tried some of the best pools the other side - on the Mawddach. I hooked one fish. I did not get to Tyn-y-groes till 9 o`clock and we stayed the night at the hotel. We were very tired after a long days fishing. Grilse 1. (Mawddach) 2lb. Sea trout (Mawddach ) 3 (1) 2 1/2lb. Wynne and I with Hugh Jones, went out about 8.30. The river was very clear, and as the sun came out bright. I gave up fishing for sewin , and went up the Eden with my trout rod and small flies. The first thing I did was to hook a sewin, but the fish broke my very light tackle in some sticks. I was equally unfortunate with two other sewin, one being a very good fish, but I managed to catch a small sewin, and 51 trout, and I left off fishing at the bridge. Wynne stuck to the Mawddach and caught one sewin ... Sea trout (Mawddach) 1, Sea trout (Eden) 1. Trout 51.

I went out fishing this morning before 10 o`clock breakfast and caught a small sewin. Afterwards I went down to Dolgun and fished some of the water I had not fished in the morning up to Bont newydd. I lunched at the station, and then fished up to Bont Rhidyr [sic]: and unfortunately hooked a sewin and lost him. The trout rose well at times... Sea Trout (Wnion) 1. Trout .63.

A fine and bright day. ... went by 8.50 train to Arthog .. walked up to Crogennau: and fished. but it was not much use the day being bright-and I think too late in the season I went up to Llyn Curry [Cyri] in the afternoon, but found it too bright, and there was next to no breeze, I pulled some small trout out of the small stream on the way up. We returned by the 5.50 train. It was a beautiful evening. Trout (Llyn Crogennau) 6 Llyn Curry [Cyri] and stream 13 = 19.

We had a good bathe this morning ... I tried to catch a few trout this morning, but found the river so very low that I gave up. After lunch ... went up to Caerynwch moor, hoping to find the birds, but we did not see a single one, although Kinsey has seen a covey of birds there. We walked home and shot two couple of rabbits. My 23rd Birthday. It was showery this morning so, so Wynne, H. Saul and I started to the Mawddach. Wynne fished near Tyn-y-groes, while Kirkhinton[?] and I went to the falls. I rose three salmon, hooking two of them. but was very unlucky. Wynne alone got any sport, catching two sewin. The midges tormented us dreadfully in the evening. Sea Trout(Mawddach) 2 (1) 3 1/4lbs.

I went out fishing this morning about 8 o`clock, and caught a sewin with fly...[Cricket cancelled] but rain came on very heavily, so ... went up the Wnion. We fished up to Bontmewydd, and then took the train up to Drws-y-nant, and the river came down in heavy flood. Unfortunately I broke my rod, and I had to walk all the way back to Dolserau to get another, and I fished the pool near home with fly, but had no sport, the weather looking very unsettled.
The sport was as follows (Wnion) Sea trout 4. Trout 40. Kinsey shot Grouse 3. Snipe 11 Caerynwch.

Wynne and I were going to Pale to shoot, but so wet was the weather we decided not to go till this evening. .. Wynne and I went out fishing with worm, the river rising very fast. A fine day: wind strong from N.W. I walked over by Blaenau to fish up the Rhydymain Stream with maggot and fly, but found the wind dead down stream, which greatly spoilt my chance of sport. We were going to have a picnic at Talyllyn, but the weather looked so threatening… I walked right up to the stone bridge over the Eden and fished up a long way with small flies. I caught a good many trout, and as the river became gradually discoloured I put larger flies and fished the best of the lower pools. I caught two fine sewin… Trout (Eden) 49 Sea Trout 2 (1) 3lb (1) 2lb 7oz

The river was in excellent order, but the fish took badly, and I lost several sewin. I fished right up to the Falls, but rose nothing till I came to the pool where I caught the grisle the other day: here I rose a fine Salmon to the Black and Yellow: and eventually hooked him on a double hooked Durham Ranger he gave me half an hours exciting sport, and John Davies landed him beautifully. Salmon 1 12lbs Durham Ranger Mawddach Sea Trout 2.

Went on to Tyn y Groes owing to continual rain, the river was very high, but a splendid colour for fly. We tried up the Eden first but found it too high, and so we went off to the falls. At the first long pool Wynne caught six lb Sewin and at 1:30 I hooked a Salmon of quite 15lbs in the mine Pool, having risen him first to a Durham Ranger. I was all alone for the first half hour, and then Wynne joined me: and we had great hopes of killing the fish: but after an hours exciting play he got off in a very rough place. We tried the Eden again, and I caught another 2lb’er at the bridge pool. We then returned to Tyn-y-Groes had some tea, and tried some of the lower pools, but Wynne also rose a fish. WE and CME Sea Trout (Eden) 2 (1) 2 ¼ lbs (1) 2 lbs Sea Trout (Mawddach) (1) 6 lbs.

Still more rain, which brought the rivers down in high flood. We did not go to the Mawddach, as there was too much rain… I began at the Ford and fished right up to the Bont Rhidge: I caught three Sewin with worm, and took to a fly in the afternoon, and caught a splendid Sewin at the tail end of Llyn Goch with the Durham Ranger. Sea Trout (Wnion) 4 (1) 3 ¼ lbs. W.E caught Sea Trout 1 Trout 25.

Wynne and I started over to Tyn y Groes in a perfect downpour of rain, and we found the river very high. We went to the Eden, and in the first pool I fished. I rose a Salmon three times. Wynne at the same time lost a fine fish and rose another, and at the tail end of the [?] pool I rose a fish twice, but he did not touch my fly. This was a bad beginning: and we then went up the falls, but the river was much too high for fly and we tried a worm: and then returned to the Eden in the evening, but even then it was too high. I went out fishing on the Wnion… and caught a Sewin in the pool in the Hollow, loosing another there… I drove up to Drws Y Nant with Smith, and we had a very pleasant days sport. [Scent?] was not good, nor were birds plentiful but Dover and bess worked splendidly, and powder was straight… Sea Trout (Wnion) 1 Guns 2 Hengwrt Drws y Nant, C.M.E & W.M Smith killed Grouse 14.

Heavy rain fell all day and there was a grand chance of catching fish… I went to the Mawddach… I [?] in a grand fish in the ‘minors pool’. He rose twice to Durham Ranger, at the tail of the pool: without stopping a moment he went straight down stream, and had I and John Davies not crossed the stream, we should have never caught him. He weighed 11 lbs… I walked home in a tremendous downpour. C.M.E Mawddach. Salmon 1 11lbs Durham Ranger. C.M.E went out on the wnion in the morning and killed Sea Trout 1.

Very heavy showers falling. We found the river in yellow flood… I commenced at Gettigemlyn (sic: Gelligemlyn) with worm, but owing to the high wind, could do nothing. I caught three nice sewing in some holes just above, one being more than 3lbs. I then walked up to the ‘Meeting of the Waters’ and fished steadily up with worm, and had great sport. I tried some of the upper pools with fly in the evening, but the river was too high and discoloured. The others were blank, but Wynne rose a grisle in the Eden three times. Sea Trout (Mawddach) 8 wght 16lbs 12 oz Largest 3lb 6oz.
